Doc Whiz's Class Scheduling Guide
Doc Whiz's Rule of Scheduling
"The scheduling of one's classes has a direct relationship to the amount of time, cost, and frustration one expends in pursuit of a college degree."
- The simplest and best solution to class scheduling is to get a good faculty advisor who is available and wants to help you learn to schedule for yourself with their guidance.
- The next best solution is to have an accurate and up to date program requirement sheet for your major.
- Being undecided and undeclared is okay for a new student (viz. freshman). If you attend Kent State University and you are an undecided and undeclared student, you should become a Kent Exploratory Major (007).
- Juniors who schedule for classes as undecided and undeclared students are wasting time and money unless they want a liberal arts degree. If that is the case, then declare general studies or liberals arts!!!
CLASS SCHEDULING PRIORITIZATION
When selecting courses to schedule, the following should be the priority categories used for selecting:
- Controlled Class which is a Prerequisite / Required Class
- Prerequisite / Required Class
- Single Section offered once per year
- Single Section offered each semester
- Preferred instructor
- Preferred time
- Preferred location
- Multi-section
Prioritization Guidlines
A controlled class should be scheduled first, select courses of a lower priority to schedule around it.
Before taking any class and hoping it will serve as a "substitute", clear with your faculty advisor.
In setting up a schedule, when in doubt, ask!! Then get the answer in writing (i.e., a program adjustment form, a memo from the faculty member, etc.)
