A major in gerontology prepares graduates for professional positions in the diverse field of aging. The gerontology curriculum is designed to provide students with a solid understanding of typical age-related changes and how these changes affect a person physiologically, psychologically, and socially. An option is available in Nursing Home Administration.

Job Outlook

According to the U.S. Census, 20% of the total population will be 65 or older by 2030. Because of the increasing number of older persons and the fact that we are generally living longer, there is a growing need for people to work in the field of aging.

Degrees & Cerfificates

Gerontology Concentration
The baccalaureate degree program prepares graduates for professional positions in the diverse field of aging. The gerontology curriculum is designed to provide students with a solid understanding of typical age-related changes and how these affect a person psychologically, physiologically, and socially.

Successful completion of this interdisciplinary course sequence leads to applied competencies that provide students with a sensitivity to the aging process, as well as the ability to understand culturally diverse older adults and their families.

Students graduate from this program with strong understanding of the aging process, the professional skills to interact with older clients, and the network of services for older adults and how to access them. The program provides students with the knowledge and skills to pursue graduate study.

We offer an Undergraduate and Post Baccalaureate Degree Program for the
Nursing Home Administrator in Training Program. This long-term care program is flexible, and requirements are dependent on the student's previous training.

Gerontology Minor
Students choosing to obtain a minor in gerontology in conjunction with a major in another area of study will significantly enhance their employability. Obtaining a concentration or minor in gerontology would qualify students to work with or on behalf of older adults and/or their families in many settings.

Both the four-year concentration and minor provide strong interdisciplinary knowledge base, reasearch skills, and preparaton for graduate study in a wide variety of disciplines. Students are eligible to join Kappa Omicron Nu, a national honorary in gerontology.

Nursing Home Administration Option (AIT)
This option prepares students for employment as administrators in long-term care settings, including retirement communities, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes. Upon completion of this course of study, students are eligible to sit for the Nursing Home Administrator's Licensure Examination offered by the Ohio Department of health and administered by the Board of Examiners of Nursing Home Administration (BENHA).

Graduate Certificate in Gerontology
Kent State University and the University of Akron, together offer a graduate-level Certificate in Gerontology which may be received in conjunction with degrees from either institution at the specialist's, master's, or doctoral levels. Students receive basic preparation in their selected discipline or major while concurrently receiving advanced knowledge and expertise in the field of aging.

Master of Arts: Gerontology
This degree provides students with an interdisciplinary course of study and opportunities to participate in aging-related research and community outreach projects.
