Student Organizations
There are several professional networking organizations available to gerontology majors. Sigma Phi Omega (SPO) is the national academic honor and professional society in gerontology. Family and Consumer Studies sponsors the local chapter, Alpha Gamma. Undergraduate students with a 3.3 GPA are eligible to join. Meetings are held once per semester with students, faculty members, and practitioners from the applied setting. This organization promotes scholarship, professionalism, and service to older persons.
The Gerontological Society of America (GSA) offers a student organization section for all students to become involved. The Kent Campus GSA was created in 2001 to provide students with opportunities to network with professionals in the field of gerontology and be involved in community service. Student leaders play an active role in the development of programs and activities. Student members of the Society enjoy full membership benefits at about the half the price of a regular membership.

Special Program Features
There are several special features of the Kent State Gerontology Program that strengthen educational opportunities for students. The interdisciplinary nature of the curriculum allows students to gain an understanding of the heterogeneous nature of the older population and the numerous factors that contribute to the aging process. The curriculum was developed using guidelines of the Association of Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE), a national network of university and college professors and practitioners whose collaborative aim is the development of Kent State academic gerontology programs.
The Program maintains a strong relationship with the Gerontology Center, so that students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of service-learning programs co-sponsored by the School of Family and Consumer Studies. The Gerontology Center serves as an on-campus resource for senior citizens in the community, as well as for students and faculty with interests in aging.
