ksu excellence in action Distance Learning and the eMEd

The Instructional Technology program at Kent State Unversity is now offering some of its Masters programs completely online, which we call the "Electronic Masters of Education," or eMEd. This approach offers an exciting opportunity for busy professionals to pursue their professional development goals and learn how to manage today's instructional technologies without leaving home (or work). You can earn the general masters degree in Instructional Technology this way or add the Computing/Technology endorsement to your existing teaching license.

The Instructional Technology Program offers opportunities to take most of its courses at a distance. In fact, you can earn our masters degree entirely online, with or without the Computing/Technology Licensure Endorsement, through our electronic Masters of Education (eMEd) program.

Most of our distance courses are offered via the Internet and the World Wide Web. Our web-based courses typically offer one face-to-face meetings at the beginning of the semester for orientation. Some courses are offered synchronously where all students meet simultaneously with the instructor in a chat room or a similar environment. Other courses feature guided independent asynchronous learning opportunities.

The eMED allows students to choose from a variety of courses that are given online and to develop a masters degree program that they complete entirely online. All of the basic required courses for both the Masters degree and the Computing/Technology endorsement are offered online at various times of the year. The Instructional Technology portions of the Library/Media endorsement program can also be taken online, In conjunction with the distance education efforts of the School of Library and Information Sciences, it may also be possible to earn this endorsement entirely at a distance.

A critical dimension of the masters degree is an online student portfolio. Students are required to develop a complex website that showcases their work throughout their masters career and to present it to the faculty before graduation. They are able to use the EHHS system or place their portfolios in various other locations as well.
